At Hook or Crook, I draw from these teachings, practices, and values to drive change and make an impact:

  • Intersectional feminism examines how our identities might make us more or less vulnerable within the systems and institutions of our society.

  • Anti-oppression demands we explore power, how it moves, and how it harms individual and collective members of our communities and organizations.

  • Decolonization, the practice of undoing, dismantling and destabilizing colonialism and white supremacy, begs us to root out the beliefs, practices, and systems that undermine the humanity of those who are marginalized.

Spoken in earnest, Ms. Simone’s words exemplified her fierce dedication to Black people, and identify the responsibility we must all assume, regardless of identity: to get more aware of ourselves by hook or crook.

At hook or crook, I deeply believe that getting more aware of ourselves means doing the difficult work of self-reflection, asking ourselves and our communities hard questions, sitting with discomfort, and holding onto our collective humanity. Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are just some of the vehicles and strategies that help us.

Together we can challenge us to transform the conditions of harm, inhumanity, ignorance, and exclusion.

By hook or crook, we can cultivate dignity, safety, care, and belonging in our organizations.

about the founder

I’m Nic, founder of Hook or Crook Consulting.

I bring a heart-centered approach, and draw on my breadth of expertise and lived experience to generate a unique set of offerings.

Together, we’ll balance a pragmatic awareness of the strategic, operational and governance priorities and challenges, while centering the visionary goals of transformative justice, bell hook’s love ethic, and survivor-first orientations rooted in the anti-violence movement.

We’ll spark bold questions, foster spaces for shared humanity, and I’ll invite you to rise to the occasion and align your actions with your values. .

Through my work I’ve allied with and supported a range of non-profit and for-profit organizations including municipalities, provincial government departments, worker associations and unions, post-secondary institutions, art and culture institutes, co-ops, front-line service providers, and more.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice Studies from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Victoria. I gratefully live and work on Squamish & Tsleil-Waututh territories in North Vancouver.
